ICYMI: Carl Junction takes second at CHS Invitational

The 78th annual Carthage Boys Basketball Invitational wrapped up over the weekend with Raymore-Peculiar defeating Carl Junction in overtime in the championship game on Saturday afternoon.

Below, you will find the three local matchups from the final day of action.


RAY-PEC 61, CARL JUNCTION 58

It was a tightly-fought title game all the way through the final horn.

Neither Carl Junction or Ray-Pec held a lead of more than four points at the end of each period.

After the Panthers rallied in the fourth to tie the game at the end of regulation, Ray-Pec got the edge over Carl Junction 10-7 in the overtime period. 

Cooper Vediz led the Bulldogs in scoring with 19 points, while X Martin added 15 points, with three 3-pointers. 

Brody Pant added 10 points for CJ.

CARTHAGE 68, WEBB CITY 65

Carthage built a sizable early lead but had to hold off a fierce comeback in order to hold onto the win in the third-place game of the tournament.

The Tigers led by 10 points after the first stanza and took a 36-30 lead into halftime. After Carthage spent the third quarter building the lead back up to double digits by the start of the fourth quarter, Webb City outscored Carthage 21-11 down the stretch before coming up just short.

Dylan Pugh had five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 28 points to lead Carthage in the books. Landon Ray had 18 points.

Holton Keith had 21 points to lead the Cardinals in scoring, while Slade Hurd had 12 and Travien Turner finished with 10 in the loss.

NEVADA 53, JOPLIN 49

In the fifth-place game, Nevada started fast but was forced to rally in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.

Nevada built a commanding 16-point advantage over Joplin in the first quarter before the Eagles rallied to take the 36-35 lead to start the fourth quarter. The Tigers responded down the stretch, outscoring the Eagles 18-13 in the four quarter to earn the win.

Kellen Braden had 17 for Nevada, while Alex Ast had 13 and Mason Majors added 11.

Collis Jones had 12 for Joplin, while Brecken Green and Aiden Scourten each had 10 in the loss.
