WEBB CITY, Mo. — In a game between two area rivals, it was a missed extra point that decided the 14-13 win for Class 5 No. 4 Carthage over Webb City on Friday in the Zimmer Marketing Game of the Week brought to you by JL Mobile Truck and Trailer Repair and Elements Construction Concepts.

Webb City took the initial advantage with the first touchdown of the game before Carthage came back to tie the game at 7-7 just before halftime. The Tigers scored first out of the locker room for a 14-7 advantage but it didn’t take the Cardinals long to get back into the end zone. The point-after try was no good, however, and that was the difference in the game.

GAME ACTION

After a quick three-and-out by Carthage, Webb City took possession and put on a long, sustaining drive that resulted in a 7-yard passing score from Jackson Lucas to Gus Karnes for a 7-0 lead with 3:10 left in the opening stanza.

Carthage drove down deep into Webb City on its ensuing possession before a fourth-down-and-8 pass from inside the 10-yard line fell to the turf in the end zone for turnover-on-downs.

Carthage was able to tie the game up late in the first half. Looking at fourth-and-8, Brady Carlton found Trent Yates on the near sideline, who spun out of a tackle and took it to the house for a 27-yard touchdown to make the score 7-7 with 1:29 left before the intermission.

After the Cardinals came up empty on the first possession of the second half, the Tigers took their first advantage of the game when Carlton capped off another drive with a long passing score, finding a wide-open Jackson Hettinger over the middle for a 26-yard touchdown with 3:32 left in the third quarter for a 14-7 lead.

Webb City refused to go away as Lucas broke free on the ensuing possession for a 73-yard touchdown run with 2:41 to play in the third. Unfortunately the Cardinals missed the point-after try to trail 14-13.

Neither team found the end zone in the fourth quarter, preserving the slim win for the Tigers.
