Joplin running back Toryn Jones and Carl Junction pitcher Kiley Spencer have been named as the Zimmer Marketing Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sept. 21 brought to you by JL Mobile Truck and Trailer Repair.
Jones, a senior, was integral in Joplin’s bounceback 45-21 win over Glendale. Jones rushed 26 times for a game-high 202 yards and two touchdowns.
“He just ran really hard, made some great cuts and did a good job of seeing where the holes were opening up in our zone run scheme,” Joplin coach Curtis Jasper said. “He finished off his runs well.”
Spencer, a junior, was instrumental in Carl Junction’s 3-0 record last week that included a 2-0 record in Ozark Mountain Conference play.
Not only was she a monster at the plate with a .636 average, .692 on base percentage, seven total hits including three doubles, two home runs and seven RBI, seven runs scored, one walk, a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases.
A dual-threat, Spencer was just as dominant in the circle with a 3-0 record in 19 innings. She struck out 18 batters and opponents had a batting average of .197 on the week.
“Kiley, with what she is able to do in the circle, and then compartmentalize when she gets in the dugout before she does what she does at the plate, it is some next-level stuff,” Carl Junction coach Cory Kerbs said.
