New Heights' Decker and Carthage's Wallace named Zimmer's Athletes of the Week

New Heights Christian Academy quarterback Logan Decker and Carthage pitcher Addie Wallace have been named the Zimmer Marketing’s Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the week ending on Sept. 7 and it’s presented by JL Mobile Truck and Trailer Repair.

Decker, a senior, finished with an eye-popping performance in the Cougars’ 82-24 win over Rich Hill in 8-man action on Friday in the season opener. Decker finished the game completing 9-of-13 passes for 142 yards and four touchdown passes, while carrying the ball eight times for 118 yards and three more touchdowns. Oh, he also had a defensive touchdown and four 2-point conversions.

“Logan did an awesome job of running the offense,” New Heights Christian coach John Lucas said to Joplin Sports Hub. “He was in command and in control. He saw the field well, made some good passes and made some good runs. He is just a very good athlete who loves to play football.”

Wallace, a senior, was dominant for the Tigers in their tourney title run to the Morrisville Tournament championship game win over Republic, 7-6, in nine innings. As the starting pitcher, Wallace was 4-0—including a no-hitter in an 8-0 win against Waynesville—on the weekend in 26 innings pitched. She allowed eight runs, just two earned, on 14 hits for a .538 earned-run average and a .154 opponent’s batting average against.

“I told her we are only going to go as far as you take us on the mound,” Carthage coach Stephanie Ray said. “She has taken on the leadership role and taken the younger kids under her wing. But at the same time, she knows when she is in the circle she is out there to compete. … She is pretty gritty. I see that she doesn’t get rattled a lot if something happens behind her. She has all the confidence in the world in the defense behind her and I think that helped her this weekend.”
